For My Night's Rainbow

A poem by Osiris Valdés

 My Night's Rainbow

I want to traverse the geography of your body,
and learn about life and your biology,
with your bones, with the pain of your times.
I want you to flow freely through my blood,
to turn your name into the most beautiful verse.

I want a diphthong of your love,

I want to take your last name and have it tattooed on me in binary code
and to learn algebra on your legs,
to burn at 180 degrees Celsius with your kisses,
and to consume ourselves in the orgasm of 356 Fahrenheit degrees of desire.

I want to be the caricature of your eyes,

the tightrope of your fears,
to create the theorem and solve the problem of your absence.
To lose myself in the relativity of your times,
and in every lapse of your thoughts,
to scream everything, I think.

To undress your body, to disorder the vibration
of the sung work that is the opera of your screams,
to forget the world in your bed,

and above all,

I want your kisses on my window.

The poem presents a complex amalgam of sensory and conceptual elements, merging biology and mathematics with human desire. The reference to the 'geography of your body' and 'algebra on your legs' reveals a fascinating exploration of intimacy, where the body becomes a map filled with deep meanings. This multidisciplinary approach invites reflection on how knowledge and desire intertwine in the experience of love.

The use of scientific and mathematical terms in the poem, such as '180 degrees Celsius' and '356 Fahrenheit,' not only intensifies the sensual language but also prompts a reflection on precision and passion in human relationships. The transformation of the body and desire into a series of equations and measurements suggests an attempt to unravel the complexity of love through an analytical lens, creating a powerful contrast between the rigidity of science and the fluidity of affection.

This poem stands out for its ability to intertwine emotional and scientific realms, challenging the boundaries between the tangible and the abstract. The blend of 'diphthongs of your love' and 'the opera of your screams' reflects a profound understanding of how desire can be both a physiological phenomenon and an act of artistic creation. The structure of the poem reveals a deep admiration for how the body and mind collaborate in the experience of love, suggesting an almost mathematical connection between passion and reason.

The poem is distinguished by its ability to integrate abstract concepts such as biology and mathematics into a narrative of love and desire. The blending of sensual imagery with scientific terms not only enriches the aesthetic experience but also offers a reflection on how knowledge and desire are interrelated in human experience. The reference to the 'caricature of your eyes' and the 'theorem of your absence' reveals an innovative perspective on the complexity of human relationships, challenging traditional perceptions of love as a merely emotional phenomenon.

By incorporating mathematical and scientific references, the poem not only explores the intensity of desire but also suggests an almost scientific approach to love. The analogy between love and mathematics can be interpreted as a metaphor for how feelings can be understood and analyzed in precise and structured terms, despite their inherently chaotic nature. This duality between precision and emotion adds a layer of depth to the representation of love and desire in poetry.
